Things to do in Winnipeg this Spring

Winnipeg has a reputation for being an oppressively cold city, but when the calendar turns to spring, all bets are off.

Here are some great things to do in Winnipeg this spring.

Take a stroll through Assiniboine Park

Winnipeg’s biggest urban park, Assiniboine Park is the best place to experience springtime in the city. With endless walking paths, swaths of open spaces, and flower and sculpture gardens, you’ll get a front-row seat to all the sights, sounds, and scents of Winnipeg’s annual rebirth.

Or, head on over the Assiniboine Park Zoo and watch the animals bask in the Sun. The Zoo is home to animals from all over our great planet, including polar bears from Churchill, camels and tigers from Asia, and, of course, everybody’s favorite, the wandering Peacocks.

And don’t worry — if it’s too cool outside, you can always head into The Leaf, Assiniboine Park’s botanical sanctuary. The Leaf features four distinct biomes, each of which house plant life native to different regions of the planet. Oh, and there’s also the Leaf Coffee Bar, which hosts perhaps the world’s greatest plant— coffee beans.

Watch the rivers come alive at The Forks

During the winter, Winnipeggers love to skate on the frozen rivers at The Forks. But, as the weather turns, the Red and Assiniboine Rivers come to life as ice sheets travel with the current like frozen logs, causing jams and making for an interesting show.

While you watch Manitoba’s metamorphosis, consider stopping by The Forks Market for a coffee or a bite to eat.

Or why not make a whole day of it and drop by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, located a dove’s flight away from the market. The CMHR highlights the struggles and triumphs of the world’s oppressed peoples, and this year they’ve added a temporary installation focussing on the impact of music in social justice movements. It’s called Beyond the Beat, and it runs until September 2024.

Watch the birds at Bird’s Hill Park

If it’s fresh-air fun you seek, you can’t go wrong with bird-watching at Manitoba’s Bird’s Hill Park. Celebrate Manitoba’s transformation with some winged friends along the Chickadee Trail, known for its little feathered friends who like to eat seeds right out of the palm of your hand! It’s the perfect opportunity for an unbeatable photo, and is one of the best places to get a unique selfie in Manitoba.

Hit the Links

You can get some fresh air and a little bit of exercise all while taking in the change of season treasures by hitting one of Winnipeg’s many golf courses. It’s equal parts challenging and relaxing, and if you’ve got the right company, it can be very, very fun, too.

Most golf courses have golf clubs available for rent. Just make sure to look over the club’s dress code to avoid any confusion before your tee time.
