Best places for selfies in Winnipeg
Winnipeg has some awesome photo spots for that perfect fall-time selfie. Here are the top places for selfies in Winnipeg
Exchange District/Downtown
Winnipeg's historic Pantages Playhouse Theatre.
Winnipeg’s most historically rich neighborhood is the Exchange District located right in the heart of downtown. Chicago-style architecture dominates the crisscross of one-way streets, and tells stories from a bygone era. This architecture style has brought much film work to Winnipeg, as the city often doubles as Chicago in Hollywood feature films.
The Union Bank Building is Western Canada's first skyscraper.
At the corner of Main St. and William Avenue, you’ll find the Union Bank Building, Western Canada’s oldest skyscraper. Other selfie-worthy buildings in the Downtown/Exchange area include the Fort Garry Hotel (222 Broadway), Pantages Playhouse Theatre (180 Market Ave.), Confederation Building (457 Main St.), the Telegram Building (70 Albert), and the Electric Railway Chambers (213 Notre Dame Ave.).
St. Boniface
Winnipeg’s culturally vibrant St. Boniface neighborhood is home to a number of picturesque places of interest. The Esplanade Riel footbridge straddles the boundary of the Forks and Winnipeg’s french quarter, offering passersby the chance to snap a pic of themselves against the backdrop of Winnipeg’s downtown skyline and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Deeper into St. Boniface you’ll find Fort Gibralter, a fur trading post built in 1810 by the North West Company. Today, the fort is staffed by reenactment actors, and can be rented for private functions. It also serves as home base for the Festival du Voyageur, a winter festival featuring live music, food, and snow sculptures — perfect for a jealousy-inducing selfie.

Venturing south to Central St. Boniface you’ll be able to grab a shot of yourself at the St. Boniface Cathedral. The cathedral, which contained the bells from the previous second St. Boniface Cathedral was built in 1906 and was severely damaged by fire in 1968. The facade remains, and a new cathedral was built behind it in 1972.

The Forks
The cradle of Winnipeg, The Forks.
One of the most important cultural landmarks in Winnipeg is The Forks. This is where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers converge, and it was an important meeting spot for fur traders in early post-contact Canadian history.
Today The Forks is home to the Forks Market, where you can find gift shops and restaurants to suit any need. You can snap a picture of yourself in front of the Winnipeg sign while you’re there, or and then walk over to the first national museum outside of the Ottawa area, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The building itself is worth a photo or two, and you can even get a selfie with a bronze statue of Gandhi, which was gifted to the Museum by the government of India in 2004.

Assiniboine Park and Zoo
Winnipeg’s largest public park, Assiniboine Park has countless selfie-worthy spots, including the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, the English Garden, as well as dozens of public art sculptures scattered about the 1,100 acres of the nationally recognized park. The park has been a gathering spot for Winnipeggers for generations, especially on July 1 when the Park acts as one of the main hubs for Canada Day activities.

Connected to the park is the Assiniboine Park Zoo, the oldest zoo in the country. There, you can snap a selfie with polar bears, tigers, and the many peacocks who roam the grounds freely.
St. Norbert
The Trappist Monestary in Winnipeg's St. Norbert neighborhood.
At the south end of Winnipeg lies St. Norbert, a community important to the histories of Winnipeg’s First Nations peoples (Assiniboine, Cree, and Ojibwe) as well as the Metis peoples. St. Norbert is home to the ruins of a monastery built by Trappist monks in the late 1800s. A fire gutted the monastery in 1983, and the remains were designated a provincial historic site.
St. Norbert also hosts the St. Norbert Farmer’s Market, where you can purchase all sorts of handmade goods from craft foods to clothing items, and the market grounds are picturesque enough to make the trip worthwhile.
Manitoba Museum
You can get all your selfie tasks out of the way in one fell swoop at the Manitoba Museum. There are tons of different displays covering the natural and historical story of Manitoba, so you’re bound to get some compelling photos.
