Comedians From Winnipeg Making Waves

Winnipeg’s comedy scene is one of the best in the entire country, and that’s no joke. More and more Winnipeg comics are planting a flag locally and nationally, like Spencer Adamus and Emmanuel Lomuro.

This week, Rumor’s Comedy Club — the top name in Winnipeg comedy — takes another deep dive into the local comedy community, and fishes out some names that you should definitely keep an ear out for.

Up-and-coming comedians from Winnipeg

You’ve got to have a heck of a good sense of humor to live in Winnipeg sometimes. As a result, we’ve been blessed with an incredible stand-up comedy scene. These are some of the Winnipeg comedians making us proud.

Spencer Adamus

A story-teller extraordinaire, Spencer Adamus spins tales that make it seem like he lives in a 24/7 sitcom. He’s an expert in making dumb decisions saying the wrong thing at exactly the right time.

And, he’s been on a tear lately. Spencer made his debut appearance at the prestigious Just For Laughs flagship comedy festival in Montreal this past July, appearing on the New Faces of Comedy showcase. He quickly followed that up with a showing at Just For Laughs Toronto in September, and is showing no signs of slowing down.

His debut stand-up special, Easy To Kill, is available now on YouTube.

Emmanuel Lomuro

One of the hardest working comics in the 204, Emmanuel Lomuro is growing at a formidable pace. He’s one of the most prolific joke writers in the city, and his disarming demeanor makes him among the most charming comics in town.

Emmanuel is one of the fastest rising comics Winnipeg has seen, headlining Rumor’s last August, just five years after his first open mic performance.

He’s been featured on the Comedy Records Winnipeg Comedy compilation, and is a past winner of the Winnipeg’s Funniest Person with a Day Job competition hosted right here at Rumor’s.

Jaydin Pommer

If Stefon from SNL and Sarah Silverman had a baby and made it do stand-up comedy in Winnipeg, the result would pretty much be Jaydin Pommer. Her mix of vulnerable self-deprication and character-driven weirdness makes Jaydin one of the most unique voices in the local comedy circuit.

Along with Spencer Adamus and fellow sketch comic Reilly Paull, Jaydin rounds out the acclaimed Winnipeg sketch comedy group, Family Dinner, who have received rave reviews from Winnipeg Fringe Festival critics year after year.

Jared Story

If clever joke writing is your thing, you’ll probably like Jared Stroy. He’s the longtime host and producer of the Winnipeg Comedy Showcase, and a fixture of the Winnipeg comedy scene for nearly 15 years. Jared’s observational style finds the weakness in the myths we live by, highlighting them with wordplay and analogies that may very well change the way you think.

Jared recently recorded his yet to be named debut album, release date TBA.

Garrett LeBlanc

Stoner comedy has its local champion in Garrett LeBlanc. The 2019 co-winner of the Winnipeg’s Funniest Person with a Day Job contest, Garrett’s absurdist observations combined with his laid-back stage presence and over-sized hoodie make him the type of person everybody wants at their party or family gathering.

Matt Kay

The other co-winner of the 2019 Funniest Person competition, Matt Kay’s smart jokes about stupid things are reminiscent of Louis CK and Shane Gillis. His meek appearance masks his sharp wit, making for a surprisingly edgy performance. Matt is a regular host here at Rumor’s, and you can catch his act just about every week.

Matt Kay was co-winner of the 2019 Winnipeg's Funniest Person contest.

Tyler Kotowski

Tyler Kotowski is the kind of comic who can go with the flow. There’s always something brewing behind Tyler’s wry smile, and even if you don’t agree with him, you get the sense that he doesn’t agree with himself either. He’s as slick as he is silly, making for a real fun time.

Tyler recently recorded his forthcoming debut stand-up album at our club, and he’s been featured on the Comedy Records Winnipeg Comedy compilation album, available wherever you stream stand-up.

More Winnipeg comedians to look for

Winnipeg is crawling with comedic talent. Here’s a few more honorable mentions to keep an eye out for.

Karlee Liljegren. Sleazy meets silly whenever Karlee Liljegren is on stage. Her sharp, punk rock edge allows her to cut through the B.S. and own her actions, commendable or not.

Matt Nightingale. Devilishly playful, Matt Nightingale keeps the audience on their toes with his mixture of deadpan misdirection and absurdist observations.

John Wilson. Behind John Wilson’s wide-eyes and cheshire grin is a comedy mind that combines the mundane with menacing overtones. In front of him, a guitar. This guy is like a David Lynch character come to life.

Alec Vandersteen. Spouting non-sequitur shower thoughts with a side-eye that kills, Alec Vandersteen will make you wonder how he gets anything done in a day, given that he must be constantly analyzing every last thing he sees.

JD Renaud. An alt-comic’s alt comic, JD Renaud’s ranty style is punctuated with self-deprication, nerdy inclinations, and true stories from his alternative lifestyle. This guy is a real character.
