Yes, Anthony Jeselnik is in Winnipeg, and that's our top pick for what to do this weekend. The notorious stand-up comedian performs live at Club Regent Events Centre on August 19th. Jeselnik is currently in the midst of his Bones and All tour, a brand new hour of comedy from the Prince of Darkness, himself

The razor-sharp Jeselnik has become known for his super-intelligent, yet dark and disturbing material. This comedy show is not for the faint of heart, and we recommend checking out some of his comedy online first, if you’re not already familiar with his work.

Folklorama continues

It is the second and final week of Winnipeg Folklorama. Several new pavilions opened up this week, so there’s still a lot of new stuff to see as the festival draws to a close. Here are some notable pavilions that have opened up this week:

 

  • First Nations Pavilion (375 York Ave.): known for hoop dances and “Indian tacos”.

  • Pavilion of Scotland (1055 Wilkes Ave.): known for scotch whiskey, bagpipes, and haggis.

  • Punjab Pavilion (1770 King Edward St.): known for unique traditional dances, samosas, and curry.

  • Japanese Pavilion (2624 Inkster Blvd.): known for sushi, sake, and Japanese flavored ice cones called Kakigori.

Stonewall Quarry Days

If you feel like getting out of Winnipeg for a bit, you can head 25 kilometres northeast to the town of Stonewall for their famous summer celebration called Quarry Days. This town fair runs from Friday, August 18 to Sunday August 20, and features a bonanza of carnival games, rides, and food trucks.

 

Quarry Days is a celebration of Stonewall’s history as a limestone producer. The town even serves as a backdrop in Carol Shiels1995 Pullitzer Prize-winning novel, The Stone Diaries.

Snowbirds at the Forks

Canada’s world-famous air acrobats, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds will be performing in Winnipeg on Saturday August 19 at 12:00 noon at The Forks.

 

The Snowbirds are composed of nine CT-114 Tutor jets performing a number of daredevil-like maneuvers that are sure to amaze.

 

And, best of all: it’s free!

StrEAT Feast

While you’re at the Forks, check out StrEAT Feast, a celebration of food highlighting the various cultural cuisines available in Winnipeg. You’ll also find local musicians and artists putting their respective crafts on display, too. It’s really a whole big thing.

Garden Concerts at the Leaf

The newest addition to Assiniboine Park, The Leaf, is celebrating summer with a series of free outdoor concerts on Saturdays at 2PM at The Leaf’s outdoor garden. This Saturday’s performance features Winnipeg singer/songwriter Brett Schulz.

 

The Garden Concert Series continues every Saturday until the end of August. Next week’s performance is the kid-oriented James Culleton “SUPERFUN” Show.

Unicorns, Icecream, & Fun

The event name says it all! The best family event in Winnipeg this weekend is happening at Shelmerdine’s Farmer’s Market (7800 Roblin Blvd). Bring the kids down to meet a real-life unicorn in person and enjoy some ice cream from local creamery, Fete Ice Cream & Coffee.

This event runs from 12PM until 4PM on Sunday, August 20th.

Taylor Swift themed drag show at Rec Room

Having trouble getting Taylor Swift tickets? Shake it off at Taylor Swift: The Eras Drag Show & Dance Party on Saturday, August 19 at Rec Room.

Swifties aged 15 and up are invited to this Tay-Tay homage featuring great local drag acts including Sylv, Rose Mortel, Bambi Rey, Cheron Sharelike, Mercy Hex, Lana Lanuit, and JT. After the drag portion, you can dance this Cruel Summer away as a live DJ spins Taylor Swift inspired beats. It all starts at 10PM on Saturday.

Torque Brewing’s 7th birthday party

Local Winnipeg breweries have been doing this city proud for some time, perhaps none more than Torque Brewing. And this Saturday August 19th, Torque is celebrating their seventh birthday with a beers and bands.

 

Head over to 830 King Edward Street to sample some of the latest Torque concoctions as well as local sounds from Deidra Borus, Ladywood, and the Northern Royals. Festivities run from 11AM to 11PM.
