There’s plenty to do in Winnipeg and the surrounding area this fall, including Le Burger Week, Pumpkinfest, and the Polar Bear Migration in Churchill.

The temperatures outside might be cooling down, but Winnipeg is heating up with great activities this fall. That’s why Rumor’s - the city’s only independent stand-up comedy joint, and the best comedy club in Winnipeg since 1984 - has created this guide to all the best things to do in and around Winnipeg this fall.

So, with no further ado, here is our list of the best fall activities in Winnipeg in 2023.

Things to do around Winnipeg this fall

Fall time in Winnipeg is full of sights, sounds, and tastes. Check out these great activities that’ll make you thankful you live in Winnipeg.

Le Burger Week

Burger buffs rejoice! Le Burger Week is back and better than ever. In fact, Burger Week is actually two weeks, September 1 - 14, which gives you ample time to try Rumor’s’ entry, the Gravy Giggler Burger, featuring a 4 oz. beef patty, fried onions, two strips of bacon, and a cascade of gravy.

Got a beef with burgers? Not to worry, Rumor’s has a full dinner menu to satisfy just about any craving you might have, from pizza, to wraps, to Rumor’s’ famous nacho platter.

Pumpkinfest

What’s fall without a pumpkin-growing contest? September 16 in Tuelon, Manitoba is Pumpkinfest, a day chock full of food, fun, and giant pumpkins. Festivities run from 8:30 AM to 4 PM and include children's activities, live entertainment, a petting zoo,  a super dog show, food, and of course, the largest pumpkin competition with a first-place prize of $1,000. The current Pumpkinfest record is 975 lbs set in 2018.

Zipline

The changing leaves of autumn in Manitoba create a breathtaking sight. How about seeing it with a new perspective… from a zipline? Hywire Zipline Adventures gives you a heart-pounding, high-octane way to appreciate the foliage of the Pembina Valley.

After you’re done ziping along the nearly 1,000-foot-long zipline, you can enjoy refreshments at Zippies Diner and Bar, or sign yourself up for a round or two of mini-golf.

Polar Bear Migration

Okay, so, this one’s not exactly close to Winnipeg, but it is definitely worth the trip! Venture north to Churchill, Manitoba located on Hudson Bay, to watch the annual polar bear migration. Every year in October and November, the Polar Bear capital of the world plays host to hundreds of these large land carnivores as they await the winter freeze.

There are many different tours to choose from, offering a variety of amenities depending on your desires and your budget. And if you’re lucky, you might get a glimpse of the northern lights while you’re there.

Brandon’s Big One

This arts and crafts fair spans two weekends in October in Manitoba’s second-largest city, Brandon. On October 14 & 15, and then again on October 21 & 22, 175 vendors descend on the Keystone Centre between 10 AM and 5 PM to show off locally hand-made arts, crafts, and foods.

There are new vendors each weekend, so you’ll want to swing by both weeks.

And the best part is that proceeds from your $5 admission fee go to the Canadian Cancer Society of Brandon. Over the past 20 years, the Big One has raised over $90K for this incredible cause.

Scarecrow Fest

Beausejour Daylily Gardens hosts the annual Scarecrow Fest, Sunday, October 1st, from 11 AM to 3 PM. This fall festival has it all: live music, kids crafts and games, hotdogs and drinks, and a scarecrow building competition. It’s free to register your scarecrow, and there are cash prizes for best three entries.

Corn Mazes

If you’ve ever told anybody to “get lost”, they probably ended up at one of the huge corn mazes just outside Winnipeg. It’s a fall family tradition to venture out to the cornfields of rural Manitoba and snake your way through a puzzling path created by one of Manitoba’s finest corn maze masters. There are five mazes to choose from:

  • A Maze In Corn, in Saint Adolphe

  • Deer Meadows Farms, in the RM of Springfield

  • Secord Corn Maze, near Dauphin

  • Pembina Threshermen’s Museum, in Winkler

  • Boonstra Farms, in Stonewall

Goose Migration

Every year Canada Geese head south in search of warmer weather. Head over to Oak Hammock Marsh or Fort Whyte at dusk to witness geese in the thousands touchdown for the night to rest before packing up and continuing their journey to the southern hemisphere the next day. This is one natural phenomenon that every Canadian should witness at least once.
