8 Fun Ideas for Your Winnipeg Holiday Party
Tis the season for office parties and family get-togethers, but if you’re the one tasked with organising your office or family event, it might not feel like such a magical time.
Arranging food, games, prizes, and outings can be a thankless job. Lucky for you, Rumor’s Comedy Club — the best comedy club in Winnipeg — has some great ideas to help you with your holiday festivities.
So, break out the big box of decorations, because it’s holiday party time, baby!
What kind of party are you looking to organise?
First thing’s first — you’ll need to know what kind of party you want to organise. Are you planning on having friends and family over to your home? Are you organising an event centred in your workplace lunchroom? Perhaps you’re trying to arrange an off-site office party? Each type of gathering has its own peculiarities.
If you’re organising an off-site party at a restaurant, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve made reservations for the amount of people who plan to attend.
If you’re booking a community centre or public hall, you may need to acquire some licences. Our guide to organising your Winnipeg wedding social will have all the information that you need to secure venues and licences for your holiday party.
If you’re entertaining at home or at the office, you’ll need to think about ordering enough food and snacks for the number of people you expect to attend.
After that, it’s all about entertainment. So, here are some fun suggestions for your holiday party.
Yule-y Wed Game
This works just like the Newly Wed game, but instead of answering questions about your spouse, you’ll answer questions about a co-worker, friend, or family member. Add prizes for the winning team to get everybody into the competitive holiday spirit.
Snow shovel
What Winnipeg holiday party would be complete without shovelling snow?
Here’s how it works: Get a large bowl and a flipper from the kitchen and dump a whole bunch of cotton balls on a table (I've also seen it done with gift wrapping bows). Then, have each person take turns trying to shovel as many cotton balls into the bowl as they can in 30 seconds while BLINDFOLDED! Whoever gets the most cotton balls is the winner!
Gift pong
Every Winnipeg party usually includes red cups and ping pong balls, but this time we’re doing things a little differently.
Place small gifts under red plastic cups and write a number on the bottom of each cup, and place corresponding numbers at the bottom of each cup in a muffin tin. Then have your friends, family, or coworkers bounce a ping pong ball into the muffin tin. Whichever number they land on is the prize cup they win.
An elf’s twerk is never done
Before you shake your christmas gift, you’ll have to shake your booty!
In this game all you need to do is fill some empty tissue boxes with bells and tie them around your competitors’ wastes so that the tissue box is resting above their butts. Then, when the music starts, everybody starts twerking to get the bells out of the box. The first person to empty their tissue box is the winner.
Balloon cup football
Winnipeg’s newest Christmas sports tradition is… balloon cup football?
This one-on-one game requires a table, a red plastic cup, and a couple of balloons. Just place the cup upside down in the centre of the table. Then each player fills their balloon with air and tries to use the balloon to blow the cup off the edge of the opposite edge of the table. The first player to get the cup off the table wins.
Broken Zoom call
This is the 2023 version of broken telephone, except instead of whispering something in your neighbour’s ear, you perform a movement, dance, or action of some sort. Then we get to see how close the last person is to mimicking the original movement.
Check your pride at the door.
Blind banana joust
Get ready to peel your pants with laughter, because the blind banana joust is pure mayhem.
In this game three or four people sit blind folded on a chair, while their partners (also blindfolded) approach with a peeled banana. The object is to feed the banana to your partner while both of you are completely blind. The winning team gets… I dunno what they get.
Candle gift selector
For this activity you’ll need about a dozen tea lights and a dozen small gifts. Set up the tea lights in one long row about five inches apart from one another, and place a small gift beside each tea light. Then have everybody stand at the end of the row of tea lights and take turns trying to blow out the line of candles with one breath. However far you are able to blow out the candles will show you which prize you win.
