So, dust off your driving mix CD and grab a pal or two, because these are the best road trips in Winnipeg.

Road trips in the Winnipeg area

Ready to hit the open road? You can go for an afternoon or a whole weekend depending on how much time you have. Either way, fun is on the horizon, so let’s get to it

Winnipeg day trips

If you’re looking to fill an afternoon, there are great Manitoba destinations that you can easily reach in an afternoon. Here are the best day trips in the Winnipeg area

Gimli, MB. Situated on the southwest end of Lake Winnipeg, Gimli is a seafaring town about 75 minutes north of Winnipeg. The town is home to the largest Icelandic population in the world outside of Iceland, and hosts an annual Icelandic festival every August called Islendingadagurinn. Gimli also plays host to the Gimli Film Festival which features movies on the beach projected onto a screen erected in the water.

The best time to head out to Gimli are the summer months, but there are still things to do in the winter months, like skating, skiing, and ice fishing. There’s also the Gimli Ice Festival which features a frozen fish toss, a hockey skills competition, frozen tee shirt competitions, a curling bonspiel, and much, much more.

Brandon, MB. If you’re more of a city type then why not head two hours west to Brandon, Manitoba. It’s a city, too. Manitoba’s second largest metro area boasts a population of over 50,000, and is home to all the same creature comforts you’ve become accustomed to in Winnipeg.

While it is a city, Brandon still has deep connections to farming and agriculture, hosting the annual Royal Manitoba Winter Fair every March. The fair has been named one of the top 100 events in North America, and features entertainment and activities for all ages.

Spring Hill Winter Park. Hit the slopes at Spring Hill, located just a few minutes north east of Winnipeg. Spring Hill Winter Park is a great place for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels to carve out some rec time. The park offers tube, ski, and snowboard rentals, as well as professional ski and snowboarding lessons. When you’re done skiing (or falling), head over to the chalet for a drink and something to eat to cap off your day.

Winnipeg weekend road trips

Elkhorn Resort. Want to kick back and relax. Elkhorn Resort has what you need. The 63 year old resort features deluxe fireplace guest rooms with private patios, and a nordic spa called Klar So — Danish for “Clear Lake” — so you can kick back and relax after your scenic three hour drive northwest.

Grand Forks. Shopaholics don't need much reason to cross the border down to Grand Forks. The North Dakota town has all the big box stores with all the brands we're missing out on here in Canada. There are even organised one-day shopping bus tours, if you don’t want to drive.

Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Twin Cities are the best weekend road trip destination from Winnipeg. It is the closest major metro centre to Winnipeg , and it's in another country, which bumps up the exotic factor.

The Minnesota capital has all four major league North American sports, so you can catch a Winnipeg Jets away game, or plan an NFL weekend with pals. The city of over 3.5 million also plays host to world-class musical acts. If you're looking for a reason to head south, just keep an eye on your favourite artist’s tour dates.
