7 Places Every Comedy Fan Must See At Least Once

Rumor’s Comedy Club is the number one stop for stand-up comedy lovers in Winnipeg. And we’re often included on lists of the best comedy clubs in the world.

So this week, we want to shout out the other iconic comedy destinations that every comedy nerd should visit at least once.

Let’s get to it!

The Comedy Cellar

When you picture a comedy club in your head, chances are you're picturing The Comedy Cellar in New York’s Greenwich Village. From its dazzlingly simple sign to its brick wall backdrop, everything about the Cellar is iconic.

And the comedy is off the charts. With the Cellar’s showcase format, you'll see half a dozen or more of the best comedians in the world perform on any given show, and celebrity drop-ins are commonplace. Don't be surprised if Jerry Seinfeld drops in for an unannounced set.

The Comedy Store

West Hollywood’s Comedy Store has been in operation since 1972. Originally owned and operated by Mitzi Shore (Pauly Shore’s mother), the Store has been home to many of the biggest names in stand up, including Sam Kinnison, Tim Allen, and Marc Maron.

A 2020 docu-series entitled The Comedy Store explores the history and drama of the iconic club, featuring interviews with many of the biggest names in the business, as well as some up-and-coming talent.

Catching a show at The Comedy Store is the perfect cap to a day of Hollywood sightseeing.

Second City Chicago

It's not stand up, but it's still funny, and it's definitely iconic.

The Second City theatre in Chicago is like the Harvard of improv and sketch comedy. Many, many of your favorite Saturday Night Live cast members cut their teeth in the Second City Stage, from Mike Myers and Chris Farley, to Tina Fey and Bob Odenkirk.

The Second City is where to go if you want to see tomorrow's TV comedy stars today.

Netflix is a Joke Fest

When the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival fell on hard financial times, it felt like a huge void in the stand up comedy world.

Luckily the Netflix is a Joke festival has stood up to carry the mantle. With over 400 shows across 35+ venues, Netflix is a Joke is 11 days of pure comedy mayhem that no comedy fan should go without seeing at least once.

Last year's lineup included heavy hitters like Sarah Silverman, Bill Burr, Kat Williams, and Ali Wong, to name just a few.

It remains to be seen what happens with Just For Laughs, but until then it looks like we're in good hands with the Netflix is a Joke Festival.

Comedy Mothership

Founded by stand-up comedian and podcast giant, Joe Rogan, Comedy Mothership is a comedy club designed and run to offer the perfect stand up comedy experience.

Comedy Mothership is located in Austin, Texas, that strange liberal fortress smack dab in the middle of red state Texas. It's the perfect addition to the Indy music loving Portland of the South.

Comedy and Magic Club

Memorabilia on display at the Comedy and Magic Club.

Located at Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles, the Comedy and Magic Club is a comedy fan favorite. Not only does this club host some of the best comedians in the Los Angeles area — and that’s a lot — but it is also home to a number of historical comedy artifacts, doubling as a de facto comedy museum. There you’ll find mementos from comedy greats like Charlie Chaplin, Jerry Seinfeld, and Robin Williams.

Rodney's

In 1969, legendary stand-up, Rodney Dangerfield, opened the first ever comedy club. It was called Dangerfield's, and only the best headliners performed there - no amateurs, no open mics, just gold.

The club went strong in New York's Upper East Side for 50 years until the COVID-19 pandemic caused the club to close due to financial distress.

Thankfully, a new club called Rodney's opened in the same space, paying homage to Rodney Dangerfield, and North America's oldest comedy club.
