7 Crazy Nights at Rumor's
We’re marking 40 years of laughs at Rumor’s Comedy Club this week, and to celebrate we’re bringing in some of our most popular headliners from the past four decades, from local heroes like Dean Jenkinson to touring juggernauts like Kevin Bozeman.
You don’t spend 40 years in the stand-up comedy business without accumulating some great stories. Anything can (and will) happen in stand-up comedy, so we’ve decided to compile this list of some of the awesomest moments in Rumor’s history.
Power outage? No problem for Matt O’Brien!
Back in May of 2023, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting the absurd, Hawaiian shirt-clad Matt O’Brien for a week of silliness. Well, one night during his run a storm knocked out the power to Rumor’s and the surrounding area. But without missing a beat, our club manager, Tyler, set up a couple phones with their flashlights on in front of the stage and Matt continued his set a capella. The result was a comedy gem never seen before or since. What a night!

Mark Forward’s forward thinking
Anything can happen when Mark Forward is in the room. He’s one of the most creative and innovative stand-ups around, and last time we had him at Rumor’s he opened his show wearing a full spaceman suit and ended by standing on chairs in the audience, playing the guitar.
There's no photos from his performance at Rumor's, but here's Mark in a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man costume. You get the gist...
It was a spectacle. And we might be in for more this coming weekend as Mark Forward helps us celebrate our 40th anniversary as part of the five-person showcase we’ve got planned.
Tom Green reinvents himself before our eyes
It’s hard to pick one Tom Green show because he always brings something neat. Tom’s one of those guys who's always reinventing himself, and back in August, following his full comedy set, he treated the audience to a handful of brand new songs he’d written. But they weren’t jokes, they were legit good songs. Sounds like Tom might be gearing up for another Juno nomination.

Then, of course, there was the time back in 2019 when Tom headlined Rumor’s, and Bob Odenkirk and Christopher Lloyd dropped in to relax after a day of shooting their film Nobody here in town.

Josh Adam Meyers’ duet with some guy in the audience
Speaking of songs, Josh Adam Meyers came by Rumor’s last spring with his musically inspired routine. The result was some incredible off-the-cuff duets with the audience. Check it out.

Norm Macdonald (enough said)
What made Norm Macdonald’s shows at Rumor’s so crazy? The fact that they happened! We were so lucky to have Norm back in 2019. Usually, comedians of Norm’s stature choose to do big theater shows, so you can imagine how excited we were when we heard Norm wanted to play Rumor’s. Each and every show was sold out, and Norm was at his Normest. What an absolute treasure to remember him by.

Jon Rudnitsky leads the cast in a bow
This summer, Jon Rudnitsky brought his theatrical style of stand-up to Winnipeg, and while he certainly has a penchant for solo act-outs, he was still able to include the audience, so much so that at the end of one show he had about a dozen audience members on-stage shaking hands and taking bows like it was the end of an episode of SNL!

Dave Williamson’s big BBQ
Club favorite Dave Williamson always brings a good time. That’s probably why he’s always invited to tour with Bert Kreischer. But, even on his own, Dave is a party. Last time we had him at Rumor’s he brought a whole barbecue set up with him, and fans came down to the Rumor’s parking lot to enjoy some meat expertly grilled by Dave himself.

And for dessert? A big helping of hilarious stand-up comedy.
